Verbs in Greek

Leat’s learn the Present tense of the verbs in Greek (GROUP A).

We use the Present tense:

When we want to describe an event or an action that is happening at the moment of speaking:

Είμαι στη δουλειά τώρα = I am at work now

Πίνω καφέ κάθε μέρα = I drink coffee everyday

Το νερό βράζει στους 100 βαθμούς Κελσίου = Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.

For an action that it started in the Past and continues until the moment of speaking

Η Μαρία από το πρωί ταξιδεύει με το λεωφορείο = Mary has been traveling by bus since morning

The personal endings of this group are the following:

εγώ παίζ-ω I play

εσύ παίζ-εις you play

αυτός παίζ-ει (ο Γιώργος παίζει) he plays

αυτή παίζ-ει (η Ελένη παίζει) she plays

αυτό παίζ-ει (το παιδί παίζει ) it plays

εμείς παίζ-ουμε (εγώ και η Ελένη παίζουμε) we play

εσείς παίζ-ετε (εσύ και ο Νίκος παίζετε/ παίζετε τένις κύριε Κώστα;) you (all) play / you play (formal)

αυτοί παίζ-ουν (ο Γιώργος και ο Νίκος παίζουν / η Ελένη και ο Δημήτρης παίζουν) they play for the masculine gender or the masculine & feminine

αυτές παίζ-ουν (η Ελένη και η Μαρία παίζουν) they play (only feminine gender)

αυτά παίζ-ουν (τα παιδιά παίζουν) they play (only neutral gender)

Present tense of the verb γράφω = to write

εγώ γράφ–ω (εγώ δεν γράφω)

εσύ γράφ–εις

αυτός / αυτή / αυτό γράφ-ει

εμείς γράφ–ουμε

εσείς γράφ-ετε

αυτοί / αυτές / αυτά γράφ–ουν
