Talking about the weather is an easy way to start a conversations in Greek. Knowing some of the most important weather – phrases in Greek, will help you fully participate in the discussion.
The Greek climate, is a typical Mediterrenean and that means that the winters are quite cold and wet, but once you’ve been here, you know that Greek summer can have very high temperatures. Thank God, the access to the beach is very easy.
To begin with, there are so many ways to describe the weather in Greek.
We should highlight that sometimes, we don’t really translate directly the phrases from English to Greek, because phrases like these, are usually idiomatic.
So, how are we going to ask ”how is the weather like”, in Greek?
The answer is below:
Πώς είναι ο καιρός; – Pos ine o keros?
Τί καιρό κάνει; – Ti kero kani
Let’s start with the most common weather phrases:
‘‘The weather is hot / warm in Greek”:
The first important phrase, you should remember is ”the weather is hot / warm”: ‘Έχει / Κάνει ζέστη – ”Ehi / Kani Zesti”. As you can see, you can use either the verb ”έχει” ehi = to have, nor the verb ”κάνει” – kani = to do to express the same meaning.
”The weather is cold” in Greek”:
The given phrase is almost similar, like the one above. ”Έχει / Κάνει κρύο ” – ”Ehi / Kani krio” is the proper way to say in Greek that the weather is cold in Greek.
”It’s sunny in Greek”:
‘‘Έχει ήλιο” / ”Ehi ilio” is used to express that the weather is sunny. I’m sure, you will use this phrase many times, if you live in Greece, so learn it correctly.
”It’s rainning in Greek”:
Βρέχει” / ”Vrehi”: Rains in Greece are more common during the fall, but not for a long time. I have to say here, that the city, I’ve studied ”Ioannina”, is one of the most rainy cities in Greece. The rains in the city are three times more frequent, than those in Athens.
”It’s snowing in Greek”:
”Χιονίζει” / ”Hionizi”: This is one of the phrases you won’t use many times, if you live in the city centers, but Greek mountains on January are pretty snowy during the winter months. We shouldn’t forget though the severe snowstorm in Athens on January of 2022, which brought many difficulties in hundreds of drivers whose cars halted for many hours on an Athens ring road.
”It’s windy in Greek”:
”Φυσάει” / ”Fisai” or ”Έχει αέρα / Ehi aera”: During the summer period, in July and August, meltemi winds can be very strong in Cycladic islands (Mykonos, Naxos, Andros, Tinos et.c.) Make sure to avoid swimming, if you see any red flag to the beaches these days. Waves don’t laugh. Choose to do a different activity, e.g. walk in the center of the island or visit a museum.
”It’s cloudy in Greek”:
”Έχει συννεφιά / ”Ehi sinnefia”
”It’s foggy in Greek”:
”Έχει ομίχλη” / ”Ehi omihli”
